Measuring acid dew point in flue gases and waste gases

Dear customers, let me introduce you to a new service – a new type of measurement that we offer for your internal needs in order to optimize the operation of some parts of your equipment.

Definition of dew point: Dew point is a certain temperature and pressure when only the gas phase is present in a closed system, but in a state of maximum saturation with water vapor or a mixture of weak acid vapors.

Common methods for determining acid dew point: Usually, the dew point for multi-component systems characterized by water vapor content and various gaseous components (SO2, SO3, HCl, HF, CO2, etc.) is complicatedly calculated using empirical relationships from the water vapor content, waste gas composition, measured temperature and pressure, or is read from graphical dependencies for single-component systems for the component with the highest concentration. These methods are characterized by their demanding scope of measurements of chemical composition, water vapor concentration, temperature, and pressure. The necessary data for evaluation are available with a considerable time lag, even several weeks, and correspond to the state at the time of measurement. The result of the dew point value determined in this way is an estimate, has a point character and does not take into account, for example, the influence of solid, microparticles (dust), which act as nuclei of the condensation process.

New method of direct measurement of acid dew point: Its advantage is the direct measurement of an unlimited number of point measurements (for example, 5 to 8 readings within 1 hour) for an arbitrarily selected time interval, for example, 1 to 30 days. The result is a graphic course of dew points in the number of, for example, 150 values per 24 hours, which characterize the real operating conditions of the measured device.

Benefits of knowing the real value of the acid dew point:

    • Safe operation of separation devices: cyclones, textile filters, electrostatic precipitators, metal flue gas ducts, fans, pipes, chimneys, acid-resistant inserts of brick chimneys, heat exchangers, economizers, etc. The known value of the acid dew point allows you to control the operation so that the waste gas temperature is maintained with a sufficient margin above the dew point, thereby preventing condensation and chemical corrosion in these devices. This allows for the extension of their service life.
    • This is important information when designing new devices (filters, selection of filter materials, materials for the used probes of measuring systems, materials for the construction of flues, pipes, dampers, fans, etc.).
    • Conversely, this data is important for operators of waste heat recovery equipment (economizers, recuperators, air heaters, etc.), as it allows them to determine the temperature to which they can cool the waste gas with sufficient margin and use its enthalpy safely without the threat of chemical corrosion of the equipment being operated.

For whom these measurements can be useful:

    • For operators of coal, biomass or their mixture, liquid fuels boilers
    • For operators of waste incineration plants
    • For operators of various filtration devices and separation systems
    • For operators of waste heat utilization devices

 Other uses, for example,

    • for designers of new boilers, separation devices, waste heat utilization devices, automatic monitoring systems

Other special applications

    • For operators of devices who are interested in increasing the service life of their devices damaged by acid corrosion, or to avoid downtime due to the elimination of malfunctions caused by condensation (sticking of filter fabrics, electrodes in electrostatic precipitators, sticking and clogging of pipes, etc.
